Breaking a Crank Arm

Vallromanes-Monserrat Introduction to 29er

I knew how important Monserrat is for the Catalan culture. When I heard this was the destination I was both excited and honoured to be part of this important ride. This journey would be something important, special and new. I have ridden many routes and for distances greater but the difference with this journey was the destination and the mountain bike I would be using.
Marcal had explained how he asked Bicioci to help with a bike for me. I would have a Niner m.c.r.9 (Magic Carpet Ride) steel geared 29er. I have never rode a 29er before this would be my first time. I saw the bike and first impressions were good. We fixed the pedals swapped the brakes around and set up the forks to suit me on the friday night. With the bike ready it was back to vallomanes for a sleep before the journey.

The 29er Revolution begins for me.
We met the others roughly 30 other riders who we would join on this epic journey of MTB and Culture. Vallromanes town square was the meeting point just after 7am. With everyone ready we were off. Starting on roads gave me time to settle into the ride. Getting a feel for the bike pedaling a 29er is like pedaling any other bike at first I didnt feel any difference. When we reached the first off road section it was then I could feel the difference. This was a hardtail and although the route was rough and full of stones the bike rolled across it with ease. The 29er wheels made rolling across the stones very fast. The route we would take was mainly on double track sandy lanes, small single track sections and roads. There was nothing technical about this route. The bike felt really good for this type of ride. Once I got a feel for the handling I got more comfortable as the day went on. The downhill sections felt o.k. but turning was very different. I wouldnt be as confident on this bike on technical downhill single track. They are not built for that anyway and why this bike was perfect for todays ride. The climbs felt good and it didnt mater what rough ground we covered the bike flew across it with ease. When we reached Monistrol de Montserrat I was told it was 10km to the monastary. 10km uphill with no stops. I was feeling good but very warm. The ride up the hill was good and on reaching the monastary I felt a great sense of achievement. The view from here was amazing. A very special ride for me on a special bike.
After a long day in the saddle I got to like this bike more and more. For a XC bike I would consider owning one of these bikes. Would it take the place of my 26 Trek? Not at this time. Maybe in the future when I start to slow down and take it easy. My riding style does not suit the 29er and I think I would break it too soon.

Thanks to Trinxacadenes MTB Vallromanes for the welcome.

Thanks also to Bicioci for the great 29er. This was a perfect bike for this type of ride. I was very impressed with your kindness in offering me the bike.

Thanks to Carol and Marcal for the memorable weekend.

Vallromanes-Montserrat.

"A friend brought up a good point. Having a custom one-off bike built to one's specs is a lot like having a mule or prototype built. If you were planning to do destructive riding on a bike like this, it is kind of silly. There are plenty of mass produced bikes that suit that application just fine. The same would go for the weight on a bike like this. If I wanted something lighter, I'd get a sub 3lb. carbon frame.

I didn't want that, or I would have gotten one. I wanted a really cool looking mountain cruiser that would be a blast to ride, a one of a kind collaboration between myself, and the craftmen that created it. Fred built it, Keith painted it, and I searched for the parts I wanted to hang on it. And that is exactly what I got."

Can you Freeride a 29er (Video)

http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/video-can-you-freeride-a-29er-29712

29er mountain bikes: alright for cross-country racing, but the big wheels can't cut it when it comes to more gnarly or technical riding. That seems to be the prevailing opinion among those who haven't yet made the switch from 26in wheels.

But is it true?

Vitus Optimum III

Top of the range. Pick of the litter. Leader of the pack. La crème de la crème. You can call it what you want. We've called it the Optimum III
With our flagship cross-country race machine we've chosen only the very best components available today to grace a frame that carries on the Vitus heritage of innovation in design. The Optimum III is an elite-level bike for elite-level cross-country racers, built with one purpose in mind – to get you on top of the winner's podium. At the heart of a stunning bike is a custom-moulded high-modulus carbon fibre frame with 3K weave finish, with race-bred geometry engineered for the maximum blend of comfort, stiffness and responsiveness. To match this frame we've assembled a selection of components that reads like a pro racer's wish list, drawn largely from the latest-generation SRAM XX family which represents nothing short of a revolution in drivetrain technology and integration of elements. Suspension duties are taken care of by the imperious Rockshox SID XX World Cup Dual Air fork – 100mm of smooth, controlled travel in a superlight and laterally stiff package, boasting features such as a hollow carbon crown, integrated carbon steerer and the brand new Xloc remote hydraulic lockout with titanium hardware. A full complement of SRAM XX also makes up the drivetrain. The Optimum III is among the first production bikes to use SRAM's groundbreaking 20-speed '2X10' platform for lighter weight, better spread of gears and more positive shifting than the traditional 3x9 format. Of course with the XX group you also get a host of extra features that slash weight and boost performance – carbon fibre Truvativ XX GXP cranks; 39x26t double chainset with SRAM's new Xglide shifting technology; matchmaker-compatible carbon fibre shifters and the forged aluminium/magnesium XX rear mech with smooth-running ceramic bearing jockey wheels. Avid XX hydraulic disc brakes feature forged magnesium caliper bodies and master cylinders, carbon fibre brake levers and stainless steel slotted rotors mounted on lightweight aluminium spiders. The package is completed with Truvative Stylo World Cup components, a lightweight Laser Disc wheelset, WTB Wolverine race tyres and WTB Silverado saddle. The Optimum III brings together the finest in carbon fibre frame technology and the very latest generation of integrated SRAM XX componentry. It's a bike that yearns to be first past the finish line. "Fitness: Step up to your riding weight
By Neil Pedoe, Cycling Plus
Step up to your riding weight

Step up to your riding weight (Paul Smith - www.smithpic.co.uk)

Achieving your optimal cycling weight will make you faster, and fitter. But what is it, asks Neil Pedoe, and how do you reach it?

“Excess body weight is the cyclist’s enemy,” says Matt Fitzgerald, author of Racing Weight: How to get lean for peak performance (VeloPress). “It wastes energy, slows you down, affects performance and stresses joints.”

You can’t change your basic physiology such as height, limb length and even potential for leanness, but, says Fitzgerald, “You can reduce your weight to a level that is optimal for performance given those genetic constraints.” You want to up your power-to-weight ratio by improving body composition through training and diet.

Fitzgerald warns against using body mass index (BMI), as touted by many doctors to gauge optimum body weight. “BMI charts are designed to identify unhealthy weights for the general population, based on a statistical susceptibility to disease,” he says. “This is far too vague to identify ideal athletic weight,” says Fitzgerald.

Instead, he says, lowering body fat percentage is the key, as it will increase your aerobic capacity because muscle has less competition from fat tissue for oxygen and fuel. (You can use widely available body fat scales).

1 Diet quality

“If you only focus on one of the five steps to reaching your optimal weight, eating quality foods is the one,” says Fitzgerald. The right foods will have the highest nutrient value, but will often also have the lowest calorie density too.

Fitzgerald splits high quality foods into six categories: fruit; vegetables; lean proteins such as fish, meats that are 10 percent fat or less, nuts and seeds; whole grains; low fat dairy; and essential fats such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, the best source of which is fatty fish.

Low quality foods are grouped into five categories you should avoid: refined grains; sweets – including soft drinks, pastries and desserts that contain large amounts of refined sugar; all deep-fried foods; whole milk dairy produce; and fatty proteins such as any meat with more than 10 percent fat.

2 Balancing energy sources

Rather than strict proportional macronutrient diets, such as 60 percent carbohydrate, 20 percent fat and 20 percent protein, Fitzgerald advises a more measured approach. “It’s not carbohydrate as a percentage of total calories you should worry about. Instead, match your carbohydrate intake to your training load while ensuring you still get adequate amounts of fat and protein and that the overall quality of the calorie sources is high.”

3 Timing nutrition

When you eat has a big impact on body composition, as it affects energy partitioning – how the calories are stored. “The key is to shift the balance of energy partitioning away from fat storage and toward muscle storage and immediate use,” says Fitzgerald.

Eat early, eat often and before, during and after exercise. Eating early makes you less likely to over-eat in the afternoon and means you’re more likely to eat higher quality calories. “Try to eat 25 per cent of your total daily calories within an hour of waking up,” suggests Fitzgerald.

Eating often can boost metabolism and thus burn more calories. It also reduces appetite, helping to avoid over-eating at meal times. The ideal time to eat before a ride is two to four hours ahead, and you should include 100g of carbohydrate.

“Fuelling a ride will enhance your performance and help you burn more fat,” says Fitzgerald. “It will also increase the number of food calories you burn and decrease the number you store.” Fuelling with carbohydrate-based energy drinks and gels during a ride will help you get leaner for the same reasons.

Eating soon after exercise also promotes leanness because it shifts energy partitioning towards muscle protein and glycogen synthesis and away from body-fat storage.

4 Managing appetite

Mindful eating is essential to cut out poor eating habits, such as emotional eating – because you’re sad, happy or even bored; spontaneous eating – just because the food is there; unconscious eating – automatically finishing that packet of biscuits while watching TV; habitual eating – because it’s a mealtime and not because you’re hungry; and clearing your plate – portion sizes vary, so why shouldn’t you leave some food if you are full?

Eat high-satiety foods that are filling and low calorie. “These include fibre, certain proteins, long-chain fatty acids and calcium,” says Fitzgerald. Eat small portions of them as appetisers before meals to help manage your appetite. Soups, nuts and low fat yoghurt are good examples.

Counting calories helps you become more aware of your diet and establish good habits. Online tools such as www.trainingpeaks.com and weightloss websites are useful. “They don’t have to be 100 percent accurate,” says Fitzgerald, “just counting will increase dietary awareness and you will automatically eat better.”

5 Training right

There are two schools of thought about the best way to exercise yourself lean: high intensity interval training or prolonged moderate intensity exercise in the ‘fat-burning zone’.

“Both are effective for fat-burning,” says Fitzgerald, “but the primary goal of most endurance athletes is to achieve maximum race performance, and getting lean is just one means to that end – so focusing on building exercise fitness is more reliable.”

The fat-burning zone is typically between 59 and 64 percent of VO2 max in trained cyclists, and between 47 and 52 percent of VO2 max in unfit individuals. For both this level equates to a comfortable but not ‘dawdling’ conversational pace. “But,” says Fitzgerald, “almost all cyclists could benefit from doing more moderate intensity miles as well as high intensity intervals.”

6 Weighs and measures

“What gets measured gets managed,” says Fitzgerald – citing research by the Minneapolis Heart Research Institute which found that subjects lost an extra pound for every 11 days they weighed themselves during a weight-loss-through-dieting experiment.

To this end, Fitzgerald suggests keeping a diary of body weight, body-fat percentage, a food journal, and a calculation of calories burned per day. To calculate daily calories burned, add Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) calories to calories burned in non sport activities, plus workouts or rides.

BMR is how many calories you burn at rest and can be estimated using your height, weight, age and, for best accuracy, your body-fat percentage. There are many online resources for calculating BMR, but try www.calculator.org which uses the popular Harris-Benedict formula.

For an estimation of total calories burned, Fitzgerald suggests www.my-calorie-counter.com which calculates, for example, that an eight-hours-a-day desk job for a 68kg male will burn 984 calories a day.

“One weigh-in per week is adequate,” says Fitzgerald, “but the minimum should be once every four weeks.” On the same day, ride a set time-trial course or long hill climb and record your time along with your weight and body-fat percentage measurement. “These are your official weigh-in days,” says Fitzgerald."

The start line often comes at the end of a rigorous week of trail riding. Most of us understand that racing is, even at the highest level of sport, only a small percentage of the time spent in the saddle. Many have two wheel sets -- one training set used for day-in-day out riding, and reserved solely for racing.  Those days are over.

ENVE XC is the lightest in our mountain line with the mindset of what goes down, must first go up.  Stiff, light, and durable this rim’s pedigree is racing. If the mention of 100K makes you think of riding and not how much money you want to make, then this rim is for you.

Millora de la frenada a la 29".

Dijous tornem a BiciOci.

Demà veurem a on som.
