Back on the Bike!

It has been a passingly strange year for me. Too strange to explain. What may come as a surprise to many is that almost three months have passed since I last threw a leg over, a bike that is.

The reasons for the time away from cycling are many. The reason behind my return is simple. Staying with my lovely aunt and uncle who have an admirable collection of bikes, how could I refuse the opportunity to jump on and go grab a coffee?

It was a beautifully simple ride. Carefree on flat pedals with no helmet. A return to childhood experiences of cycling. We cruised through the back streets of the inner north suburbs of Canberra to grab an excellent coffee at a well frequented cafe (translation: it was full of roadie cyclists in full lycra and carbon fibre everywhere).

Our two bikes looked wonderfully conspicuous amongst the dull black of the $100,000 or so of road bikes that were leaned up around the cafe.

Of course Dom provided me with a single speed, he is my uncle after all and he knows me well.

It was a great way to start the day, a great way to rediscover the simple pleasures of riding, and now as I sit sipping another coffee in another cafe, my mind is wandering to the year ahead and the cycling adventures that await. 

SSWC in Japan? Quite possibly...

Lazy summer days in Barcelona? Most definitely! I believe I'll be flying in during the last week of July...now if only I knew some cool single speeder types in that part of the world...
